The hill drive

October to early December gives the clearest mountain views, which is the whole point of Darjeeling. March to May is pleasant with spring blooms but hazier. Monsoon brings landslide risk on hill roads and should generally be avoided.
Winter nights are genuinely cold — pack accordingly, even if Kolkata is warm when you leave.
