Dakshineswar and Belur Math by Cab: Half-Day Temple Trip from Kolkata

13 October 2026 3 min read

Dakshineswar Kali Temple and Belur Math sit on opposite banks of the Hooghly in North Kolkata, connected by Bally Bridge and Nivedita Setu. A cab with a driver makes it easy to cover both in a half-day trip of 4 to 5 hours from central Kolkata, without hunting for parking or return transport.

Quick facts

Trip length 4 to 5 hours from central Kolkata
Distance Roughly 15 km from Esplanade to Dakshineswar
Best time Early morning or late afternoon
Suggested car Hatchback or sedan; SUV for families

Suggested plan

Start with Dakshineswar early in the morning, when the queue is shorter. The temple, built by Rani Rashmoni in the 1850s, is closely linked to Sri Ramakrishna. After darshan, cross the river to Belur Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission founded by Swami Vivekananda.

Belur Math closes to visitors around midday and reopens in the afternoon. Check the current visiting hours on the official Belur Math website before you leave, and plan the order of the visit around them.

  • Dakshineswar Kali Temple
  • Cross via Nivedita Setu or Bally Bridge
  • Belur Math
  • Return to the city

Visitor rules to know

Both places restrict photography in their main shrines, and Belur Math is strict about silence and mobile phone use in the temple. Wear modest clothing. Footwear is left outside, so keep a small bag for it.

On Kali Puja night, Kalpataru Day (1 January) and the Ramakrishna and Vivekananda birth anniversaries, crowds are much larger. Allow extra time.

Why a cab works better

Parking near Dakshineswar fills quickly, and a ferry between the two banks depends on its schedule. A car with a driver drops you at the gate, waits, and takes you across the river. For a fixed half-day plan, book an hourly package rather than two separate rides; see hourly car rental.
