Kolkata to Gangasagar Cab: Fare, Ferry Route and Travel Tips

13 October 2026 3 min read

A Kolkata to Gangasagar trip combines a cab, a ferry and a short road ride on Sagar Island. The cab covers about 105 km to the Lot 8 or Harwood Point jetty near Kakdwip, which takes about 3 hours. From there a ferry crosses the Muriganga river to Kachuberia, and a local vehicle continues to the Kapil Muni Ashram and the beach.

Quick facts

Cab distance About 105 km to the jetty
Cab time About 3 hours
Ferry Lot 8 or Harwood Point to Kachuberia
Main event Gangasagar Mela, Ganga Sagar Snan on 15 January 2027

Step by step: Kolkata to Gangasagar

Drive south via Diamond Harbour Road through Amtala and Diamond Harbour to Kakdwip and the Lot 8 jetty. Harwood Point is the other main jetty used during the mela.

Ferry timings depend on the tide, and services can pause at low tide. Leave Kolkata early so you reach the jetty with daylight and time to spare.

On the island, buses, shared vehicles and private cars run from Kachuberia to the temple and beach, about 30 km.

  • Kolkata to Lot 8 jetty by cab
  • Ferry across the Muriganga
  • Kachuberia to Kapil Muni Ashram by road
  • Return the same way

Day trip or overnight

A same-day return is possible but long. Most families stay one night on the island or near Kakdwip, especially with elderly travellers. A round-trip cab with waiting means the car is at the jetty when you come back.

Gangasagar Mela 2027

The main Ganga Sagar Snan for 2027 is on Friday 15 January. Crowds, ferry queues and road diversions are heavy for several days around it, so add hours to every leg. See the Gangasagar Mela cab page for mela-specific packages.
